Hot Club of Detroit It’s About That Time Mack Avenue – 2010 Sounds of Timeless Jazz It’s About That Time is the third release by Hot Club of Detroit and one that pays tribute to guitarist Pat Martino with the opening track called “On The Steps.” The song is based on Martino’s composition called “On The Stairs” and briefly quotes John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” – while excusing the pun! Although the group was initially and continues to be inspired by the great Django Reinhardt, the HCOD has widened their influences to include Charles Mingus (“Nostalgia In Times Square”.) Joe Zawinul (played here as the title track in a medley with Reinhardt’s “Heavy Artillerie”) and a reworked version of Chopin’s “Tristesse” E Major Etude! Of course there are the wonderful songs of Reinhardt that the group includes in their core repertoire such as “Duke and Dukie,””Noto Swing,” and “Sweet Chorus.” Several original compositions written by each member of the group rounds out this outstanding set.
