First Date
( Capri – 2004)
by John Thompson
Want something different? How about some easy feeling swing and mellow music with the Flute as the front instrument. Big deal? How about three flute players? That’s what you get with a Capri Records release. The group is called Flutology, which features flutists Frank Wess (bass & c flute), Holly Hofmann (c), and Ali Ryerson ( alto & c). The name of the release is called “First Date.” Due to a top-rated rhythm section of Mike Wofford (P), Peter Washington (B), and former Monk drummer Ben Riley, this disc is a good mix that is sure to please jazz lovers who prefer the softer side. The song selections include famous composers-players.
Let’s start with the swinging side. How about Charlie Parker’s “Be Bop,” Hank Mobley’s “This I Dig Of You,” Cunliffe’s “Flutopia,” and Wess’ own “Sump’ Went Wrong.” The mellow side include Lee Morgan’s “Ceora,” Thad Jones’ “A Child Is Born,” and Don Grolnick’s “Rainesville.
This is a must for flute players and lovers. 3/12 stars.
