Second, Russell Gunn(t) can definitely play. The songs &#8220;No Separation&#8221; and &#8220;The Critic&#8217;s Song&#8221; contain the most urban funk flavor, with Gunn playing a tasteful electric trumpet on Separation (also equipped with turntable scratches), and rap lyrics (three words that constitute the &#8220;Parental Advisory&#8221; label attached).  There is a nice variation of the tune, &#8220;Variations&#8221; that feature a warm solo by vibraphonist Stefon Harris. &#8220;East St. Louis&#8221; carries an up-tempo, semi disco, tasteful, Roy Ayers feel, with some nice percussion that works.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;John Wicks,&#8221; &#8220;&#8230;dedicated to the memory of my true homeboy, John &#8220;Fred&#8221; Wicks,&#8221; is a &#8220;Quiet Storm-like&#8221; mellow piece to which Carl Burnett supplements with a fitting acoustic guitar. &#8220;Strange Fruit, made famous by Billie Holiday, demands one attention throughout, as it is performed with some abstraction and East India feel, going directly into Gunn&#8217;s own spoken word-style, &#8220;Stranger Fruit,&#8221; for a combined 11:03.  <\/p>\n<p>If you are ok with Soul, Hip-Hop, R&amp;B, and Acid Jazz, as well as creativity, this would decorate the collection handsomely. 4 stars  <\/font>              <?php require($DOCUMENT_ROOT . \"_footer.htm\");   ??><\/body><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Russell Gunn Ethnomusicology Vol 3(Telarc &#8211; 2003) by John Thompson<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3980","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jazzusa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3980","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jazzusa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jazzusa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jazzusa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jazzusa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=3980"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/jazzusa.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3980\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jazzusa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=3980"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jazzusa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=3980"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jazzusa.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=3980"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
