Many more familiar charts from Thad Jones, like <em>Central Park North<\/em>, <em>Birdson<\/em>g, and <em>The Great One<\/em>, plus some big time reed men in <strong>James Moody<\/strong>, <strong>Benny Golson<\/strong> and <strong>Frank Wess<\/strong>, plus Thad&#8217;s older brother, the ubiquitous octogenarian pianist, <strong>Hank Jones<\/strong>. There are also other charter members of the Thad Jones\/Mel Lewis big band including bassist, <strong>Richard Davis<\/strong>, trumpeter, <strong>Jimmy Owens<\/strong> and the always smoking <strong>Eddie Daniels <\/strong>on sax and his distinctive clarinet (listen to &#8220;Little Pixie&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>    Thad was a trumpeter\/cornet player\/composer and arranger, who single-handely changed the sound and rhythm of what modern big bands sound like, first with the Count Basie band and then with his own ground-breaking unit, TJML big band.  Here it&#8217;s a little mini-version with those aforementioned sax legends.  Frank Wess plays some pretty flute on  &#8220;Don&#8217;t Ever Leave Me&#8221;, Moody strikes the right mood on the title track &#8220;The Summary&#8221; in duet with Hank Jones on piano. Here Wess and Moody are joined by Benny Golson on the only tune on the album Jones didn&#8217;t write, but was probably the big band&#8217;s biggest hit, &#8220;The Groove Merchant&#8221;.
