The Music of Tom McIntosh
(Ipo – 2004)
by Paula Edelstein

This excellent recording features performances by some of jazz’s best musicians including Benny Golson, James Moody, Kenny Barron, Stefon Harris, Buster Williams and many more. The compositions and arrangements of Tom McIntosh include “The Cup Bearers” – McIntosh’s best-known song and a 16-minute version of “Ruptures in the Rapture” which is based on “My Blue Heaven” with pianist Helen Sung at the helm.

She manages to keep your attention with her exciting improvisations and a steady stream of harmonious chords. There are also two bonus tracks – “Billy’s Bounce” and “Long Ago and Far Away” which add to your listening pleasure. The Charlie Parker composition gets a much needed revitalization and needless to say, it’s worth the listen.
