Nicole Mitchell
Black Unstoppable – DVD
Ray Redmond

Nicole Mitchell brings an exciting new approach to flute improvisation. Recorded live at the Velvet Lounge, the material on this DVD is imbued with a retro-funk feel.

Harkening back to the park-jazz concerts of the ’70s “Cause And Effect” is an instrumental groove that emphasizes the overall retro feel. “Sun Cycles” is more of a free jazz piece with a lot of improvisational licks.

Ugochi Nwaogwugwu is vocalist on three songs, most notably “Love Has No Boundaries”, a great duet with trumpeter David Young.

Personnel: David Boykin, saxophone; David Young, trumpet, Jeff Parker, guitar; Tomeka Reid, cello; Josh Abrams, bass; Marcus Evans, drums; Ugochi, vocals.

Co-president of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), she is the founder of the critically acclaimed Black Earth Ensemble. Mitchell, Downbeat magazine’s “#1 Rising Star Flutist 2006 and 2007,” has performed with Anthony Braxton, James Newton & Muhal Richard Abrams.

Awarded “Chicagoan of the Year 2006” by the Chicago Tribune, Mitchell does residencies, workshops & panel discussions in Europe, Canada & the U.S.
