Marilyn Scott – Nightcap
Marilyn Scott
Nightcap
(Prana – 2004)
by Gene Thompson
These are eight of the sweetest melodies I’ve ever heard on one CD. The first song on the CD immediately got my attention and set the tone. I could only think of an intimate setting while listening to “I Wished on A Moon”. The instrumental piece of this song really caught my ear, the soft piano, the guitar solo all made this song very entertaining. I want to be careful and not categorize Marilyn Scott’s music or even compare it, but her sound amazingly resembles that of Diana Krall. For a quick minute I had to check my CD player.
The song “Smile” (my favorite) is greatly appreciated because it’s just something people don’t do much of. I love the way Marylyn puts it… “you must keep on trying, what’s the use in crying, you’ll find that life is still worthwhile, if you just smile” . You can see why this is my favorite song on the CD.
The timing of “Here’s That Rainy Day” caught me off guard just a little, simply because it was raining at the time I was listening to it. I live in Southern California, now you understand what I’m saying here. Although the song moves a little slow, it continues to show the unique writing and singing talent of Marilyn Scott. On this song she really puts some emotion into it. Maybe I just love to hear piano solos..the one on this song is very good.
Overall, this is a very good CD. It covers almost every mood and mindset I could think of. Now, I’m not saying you have to be in a certain mood to listen to Marilyn Scott’s Nightcap CD, but it certainly makes you think when you do stop and take a listen. I thoroughly enjoyed “Nightcap” and I know you will also.
