Originally put together in 1960 as a sort of concept album, this collection of songs with city and state names in them seems a bit rushed and thrown together.
Ray does his best to inject his soul into road ditties like "Alabamy Bound" and a crackered duet of "New York's My Home," but it would be difficult for anyone - even as great as Ray Charles Robinson (no relation) was - to put the same feel into his signature "Georgia on My Mind" as he does into "Moonlight in Vermont."
Speaking of signatures, it seems odd that the track most elicited by the album's title (i.e., "Hit the Road, Jack") was only added in this recent reissue. Thank goodness for the savvy folks at Concord! Even so, the original set is entertaining and can be a great soundtrack to your next road trip. After all, who better to have along for your "Sentimental Journey" than the Genius himself?
