The Jazz Journalists Association announced winners of 2009 Jazz Awards at the Jazz Standard in New York City Tuesday, June 16, honoring 90 year-old elder statesman Hank Jones and 25 year-old up 'n' coming bassist-singer Esperanza Spalding, among 40 more musicians, presenters, jazz supporters and jazz journalists for the 13th year. Recipients of the Jazz Awards receive engraved statuettes from the international organization of some 450 writers, broadcasters, photographers and new media producers.  more >>

Wayman Tisdale Basketball Star and Jazz Musician Dies at Age 44
CNN - May 15, 2009
Wayman Tisdale, who became a successful jazz musician after retiring from pro basketball, died Friday May 15, 2009 after a two-year battle with cancer. Tisdale, 44, died in a Tulsa, Oklahoma, hospital, where his wife took him when he had trouble breathing early Friday, agent Scott Pang said.

Tisdale's death was "a complete shock" and came as he prepared to return to the recording studio next week to work on a project with jazz guitarist Norman Brown, Pang said."He was a real testament to the power of positive thinking," Pang said. "Even after the cancer and amputating his leg above his knee, he never lost that smile on his face.  more >>

Kenny Rankin Singer, Songwriter and Musician Dies at Age 69
DLMedia - June, 2009

Kenny Rankin died from complications of lung cancer at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles on June 7 at the age of 69. Rankin's music career spanned 50 years beginning with a handful of singles for Decca Records in the late 1950's.  A few years later he signed with Columbia Records and found himself playing guitar on Bob Dylan's landmark 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home.  Soon after, The Tonight Show host Johnny Carson became such a fan that Rankin was invited to appear on the show more than 20 times. Carson also contributed liner notes to Rankin's 1967 debut LP Mind Dusters, which included his much covered pop standard "Peaceful.  more >>
