Geoffrey Keezer – Falling Up
Sublime: Honoring the music of Hank Jones
(Telarc – 2003)
by John Thompson
My wife said she’s heard of Hank Williams, but not Hank Jones. We almost divorced over that one. Hopefully, we will remain hitched by the conclusion of this review.
Hank Jones was one of the all-time great Jazz composers, and a member of one of Jazz’s greatest families: Brothers Thad was himself a great composer and trumpeter, and Elvin was the great drummer with John Coltrane’s classic quartet. Besides playing with Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Ella Fitzgerald, Hank Jones was a staff person for CBS, playing on radio and television programs. He is 85 years old.
On to this release, this is a smorgasbord of the “88’s” with no other instrumentation. Pianist Geoffrey Keezer plays duets on eight of the ten tracks with the following guests: Kenny Barron, Chick Corea, Benny Green, and Mulgrew Miller, while nine of the tracks are Jones’ compositions. Not much more can be said about these 5 great musicians. If you like piano music, then this one should make your library. Absolute 5 stars.
