Etta James – Love Songs

Etta James
Love Songs
(RCA Victor/Legacy – 2006)
by Matthew S. Robinson
At Laaaaaaaast – A collection of standards and romantic hits performed by HRH Etta James. From the sweeping introduction of the afore-referenced classic to the Stax-y ache of “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” and the powerful proclaimation “There is No Greater Love,” this compilation covers all the bases that Ms. James ha ever crossed- and more!

And though some of the Great American Songbook selections arfe tempted to fall into the contemporary morass of bandwagoners, Etta is most often able to add her signature touch to well-loved tunes like the always appropriate “Come Rain or Come Shine,” aqn instructional “Teach Me Tonight,” and a time passing “Night and Day.” Not content to sing the Blues, James demonstrates an understanding and comkmand of an array of styles, making each one her own, at least inpart.
