Bruce Barth – Live at the Village Vanguard

Bruce barthBruce Barth
(MaxJazz – 2003)
by Paula Edelstein

Subtle, sophisticated and creative are but a few of the attributes Bruce Barth has come to be associated with. The producer, composer, arranger and pianist is featured in the classic piano trio format on LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD. Accompanied by the internationally renowned bassist Ugonna Okegwo (Michel Cimino) and the inimitable drummer Al Foster (McCoy Tyner) on this ‘live’ set originally recorded at New York’s Village Vanguard in November 2002, the pianist, who helped launch MaxJazz’s Piano Series with EAST AND WEST in a sextet setting, Barth’s piano and composing skills are in top form on such songs as “In The Still Of The Night” and “Days of June.” The CD features four Barth originals, three standards by Thelonious Monk along with Harold Arlen, Cole Porter and Gene DePaul standards. Best bets: “Little Ditty,” “Star Eyes,” and Ugonna Okegwo’s arrangement of “Let’s Call This.”
