Beegie Adair – I’ll Take Romance

Beegie Adair
I’ll Take Romance

(Hillsboro – 2002)
by Carmen Miller

I first heard Beegie Adair when the her Christmas CD showed up at the JazzUSA office back in late 1999 and I was asked to review it. Although I did not do the review, I listened to the CD and thought her work was precise and well performed. I would apply the same description to her new release, I’ll Take Romance. Backed by the Jeff Steinberg Orchestra Beegie and her traditional jazz trio cover well known love songs like The Look Of Love, I Left My Heart In San Francisco and Smoke Gets In My Eyes. The style of the arrangements is thick and lush with orchestration, emulating the musical style of love songs in the late-fifties to mid-sixties.

Definitely intended as mood music, the pace of the entire CD is measured and contemplative. Even the uptempo Let’s Fall In Love has been slowed and is doled out in a patient, carefully crafted manner. Other favorites covered include I’ll Take Love, Some Enchanted Evening and The Way You Look Tonight. Produced by Jack Jezzro, this CD definitely pute the ‘Music’ in ‘Wine, Music and Romance’ but it’s probably too mellow for your weekend BBQ.
